Dear Learners,
Whether you’re working in early childhood education or community services, you’re likely to encounter behaviours of concern at some point in your work. Behaviours of concern are behaviours that might be unsafe, distressing, or disruptive to others or to the person themselves.
Examples of behaviours of concern may include socially or sexually inappropriate behaviour, physical aggression, or expression of anger. These behaviours are often a form of communication signalling unmet needs, emotional distress, or environmental triggers. Rather than reacting with frustration, take a step back and assess the situation calmly. Ask yourself: What might this person be trying to express?
Knowing how to respond in a calm, respectful way can make a big difference—not just for the person showing the behaviour of concern, but for everyone around them. It’s not about fixing the situation on your own, but about helping things settle down and making sure everyone stays safe.
When responding to behaviours of concern, you can use the following strategies:
- Prioritise safety: never put yourself or others at risk. Step back if needed or move others to a safe space
- Assess the situation: consider if the behaviour might be due to illness, injury, or a disability needing urgent care
- Keep calm and get help: know how to respond to an escalating situation, when to seek assistance, and when to step away. Staying calm will help others to feel more settled
- Watch your body language: your body language or tone of voice may be interpreted as aggressive or confrontational by someone in distress. Aim to appear non-threatening and speak gently to avoid escalating the situation
As an educator, it is important to get a better understanding of the behaviour of concern to deal with it appropriately. Every child is different, so it’s important to be flexible in your approach while keeping safety and wellbeing a top priority.
As you progress through your studies, you’ll develop the tools to navigate these challenges with confidence. Keep up the great work and continue building your skills for success!
Happy Friday!
